Blogs Posts by Nick McHardy

Welcome to my blog, where I cover tech, games and whatever else that’s interesting in the universe like vinyl, fusion jazz and side projects.

This website is inspired by the web of the late 90s - no, not just the style of the site - but also harking back to a time when people would set up websites (probably on Geocities or similar) and write about anything that interested them. Most of the websites looked terrible (my first few sites were no exception) but it was so liberating having your own site. So here’s my modern-day version of that late 90s vibe.

Not sure where to start? Here are some blogs to get you started:

There’s also a 🍊 Garden Diary to check out. It’s sometimes updated as the seasons change.

The Shawshank Redemption - Movie Review

To continue my series of film-reviews-whilst-on-a-plane, here’s the latest installment. You can catch the first at Extreme Job - A Movie Review.

The Shawshank Redemption

United States (1994)

9.3 on IMDB

Ah, the Shawshank Redemption. Despite being such an old movie, I have never watched it until now. I had always wanted to, but never had the time. I guess I was fascinated with the stupidly high IMDB score of 9.3. You just don’t see a score that high very often but with a quick glance at the top 10, they’re mostly old movies. I should work my way through that list, one day! Oh yes, and it’s the highest rated movie ever on IMDB. So let’s see what the fuss is all about.

I put this down to the 22.5 hours spent flying combined with the movie selection onboard the flights being surprisingly decent. I managed to fit in 7 films and I’m going to embark on a series of short movie reviews of all 7. I’ll be posting these in memory order, starting with…

My Favourite Project

📅 Posted 2019-04-16 (5 minute read)

You know what, blogs like this one got me thinking. Some people work on a lot of projects over their lifetime, but what makes a project really stand out as a great experience?

If you haven’t read Ben’s article, I suggest you do because it starts to discuss ways in which projects can become unexpectantly enjoyable.

Like a lot of people in IT (or technology or digital or whatever it’s called these days), I’ve had my fair share of great projects and down-right average ones.

Them Dial-up Days

📅 Posted 2019-04-04 (13 minute read)

Times were easier back then. You know, that familiar sound of the modem happily dialing and churping away as it negotiated the best speed your phone line can support. Today’s post is a bit of a retrospective about the days gone by: Them Dial-up Days. One apology ahead of time: most of this predates when I had a digital camera (and why would I take a photo of a dial-up modem anyway?) so sorry if this is a bit of a text-fest.
