Blogs Posts by Nick McHardy

Welcome to my blog, where I cover tech, games and whatever else that’s interesting in the universe like vinyl, fusion jazz and side projects.

This website is inspired by the web of the late 90s - no, not just the style of the site - but also harking back to a time when people would set up websites (probably on Geocities or similar) and write about anything that interested them. Most of the websites looked terrible (my first few sites were no exception) but it was so liberating having your own site. So here’s my modern-day version of that late 90s vibe.

Not sure where to start? Here are some blogs to get you started:

There’s also a 🍊 Garden Diary to check out. It’s sometimes updated as the seasons change.

Using Amazon Rekognition to produce better alt tags

📅 Posted 2018-09-25 (7 minute read)

I haven’t had a tech post for a while so I figured it was about time I discussed one of many AWS services available today: Amazon Rekognition. It’s certainly an awkward word to type, but what can we do with it? I added a ticket to my backlog, simply: “Do something interesting with AWS Rekognition”. This post is the result of doing something interesting! I’m a bit lazy when it comes to adding alt text to images on my site and I know this has direct implications for SEO and accessibility.

The Humble MiniDisc

📅 Posted 2018-08-29 (14 minute read)

Ah, the humble little disc in a hard shell known as a MiniDisc. It’s a little hard to believe how old the format really is! Today’s blog comes to you with kind support from ATRAC and the magneto optical community. Yes, it’s the world of MD. A history lesson Today’s blog will focus on the period I know best: late 1990’s until more recently. But first… Sony worked to develop the MiniDisc technology as a competitor to Panasonic’s Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) and Sony’s own Digital Audio Tape (DAT).

📅 Posted 2018-08-24 (5 minute read)

I’ve spent more than a decade working in large organisations across a variety of roles with an open calendar, so here are my thoughts on why I did it and why I think everyone else should give it a try, too. Some Background Previously, I worked at Lendlease for 9 years (yes, I gave up long service leave). Early on, I decided to open my calendar as ‘read’ for whole organisation.

Ryuichi Sakamoto's Coda: A Review

📅 Posted 2018-08-16 (8 minute read)

Recently, Cynthia and I had the pleasure of watching a film called Coda which showcases more recent musical endeavours of Ryuichi Sakamoto and the very personal impact of dealing with the news of cancer. This post is probably full of spoilers in the traditional sense and less of a film review, however don’t let that deter you. His story is very real and for me, the film was more about the experience and how it changes the way you see the world.

Why the Sega Dreamcast is the best console of all time

📅 Posted 2018-08-13 (11 minute read)

Getting back into the “not-so-serious” blog series, here are my thoughts on why the Sega Dreamcast is the best video game console of all time. Of course this is biased. But you already knew that! North-American readers will note the blue hue of this logo: it was red in the US but blue in Europe, to avoid similarities to the Tivola logo. Australia got the European version - to match the PAL standard no doubt
